My main focus whilst producing this video was the audio journey of storytelling. I put maximum effort into syncing the pace and vibe with the backing track; the letterbox bars disappearing at the start with the rise of the music, the big box drop transition slamming into the screen when the bass kicks in (as the video goes into my technical portfolio to highlight the chapter switch), the fast cuts being exactly on the beat, the quick zoom in the video editing clip being matched exactly to the melody warp, the slo-mo effect for the clips when the music slowed, my “air-kick” landing on the final beat before the music switches (in music performance), old cinema projector soundclip to highlight the distinction between the main video and outro (because, yes, there’s a jarring vibe switch!).

I wanted to have something purposely contradicting the slowdown for the end credit scene, like the end of 28 Years Later when [SPOILERS!] Jimmy Savile shows up with his Power Rangers squad and it snaps you out of the heaviness of a movie about confronting mortality. This outro scene turned out to be my Marmite moment with test audiences, but I’m ok with that – not everyone gets Danny Boyle either.

The outro is intentionally game-related for the games industry. The audio clip is Smooth McGroove, who is well known for his acapella game theme covers (I messaged him to ask if I could use it, he approved and wished me luck!). Some people will notice these things and some of it won’t land but I’ve done my best at showing audio pacing, syncing skills and audio-emotive storytelling, and I’m really happy with the results.
